    Articles: RiscLua 5.40

    Sunday, April 15, 2012 - 07:44 PM, (7019 Reads)

RiscLua was updated to version 5.40 in November 2011.

RiscLua has been developed over the last ten years as a version of the Lua programming language for RISC OS. Lua was originally devised as a data-entry language for non-programmers. It has remained simple and easy to learn. RiscLua is intended as an upgrade path for BASIC programmers (they will find much of the syntax similar) who might like to use the expressiveness of Lua. For example where BASIC uses !,?,$,SYS,DIM RiscLua uses (in the riscos library) !,?,$,sys, dim. You can download the current RiscLua distribution from here. What is new in version 5.40 is that memory grabbed by dim is now garbage-collectible.

A certain amount of tutorial material is accessible from here. I realize that much of it is inadequate for the absolute beginner, so I would be grateful to receive criticism and suggestions from anybody who would like to see more.

I have written a small and very dirty tool to convert BBC BASIC into lua "automatically". It will only do 70% of the work but it may help you to convert your existing programs or libraries to lua if you decide to start writing your code in lua.

You can find it on the www.luafox.com website in the freeware section ("basic2lua").
